Phosphorus pentabromide (PBr 5) is a bromination agent generally used to convert alcohols to bromides and in the dibromination of ketones. PBr 5 can also be used as the phosphorus source in the preparation of indium phosphide (InP) nanowires. Phosphorus pentabromide - chemical information, properties, structures, articles, patents and more chemical data.
Phosphorus pentabromide is a yellow crystalline solid which melts to a red liquid with decomposition. It fumes in the air. A red form has also been described, but this is probably PBr 7. The densities and specific volumes of the liquid under the pressure of its own vapour were determined in a sealed evacuated glass dilatometer.
